Donald Sales
Choreographer

Collaborator for Cadence City Connect: Vancouver 2009

Choreography: I Used To Agree With You and Smelling The Color 9

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mr. Sales trained as a classical dancer at the June Runyon School of Ballet in Oklahoma and extended it at the Dnace theater of Harlem School in 2001 and joined the Dance Theater of Harlem company that same year. While a member of the corp de ballet he made a strong impression in the sea of dancers and made an impression of Artistic Director Arthur Mitchell.
Sales began choreographing while still a ballet student, his first ballet being to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcraker. He became increasingly absorbed in the creation of dance, developing his ideas from workshops and guest teachers. His early works for the June Runyon School of Ballet include Take Flight, Cresent Moon based on The dynamics of Bob Fosse and Bjork.
In 2004 Sales joined Ballet British Columbia as a corps dancer only to be promoted a year later. Drawing critical attention for his dramatic stage presence and strength as a dancer, Sales was also soon receiving increasing praise for his daring creativity. From 2005 to the present he has became one of Ballet British Columbia’s goto guys when it comes to a new creation from Artistic Director John Alleyne. Sales’s movement style, is especially evident in A Streetcar Named Desire (2005),  A hint of animalism mixed with the subtly’s of the classical dance that's interupted with the normal human actions within us all. Sales like to refer to his movement as a “rubberband effect”, you can pull a rubberband to it’s maximum in different direction simultaneously but when you let go of one end there’s a response from the opposing parts.
Sales’s ballets for BBC dancer, BBC Mentors, Art’s Umbrella, Dancestreams, and indepent artists include: The August Movement ; Lhaugs and Glieggs; 14; The blues in her left thigh; Qui Vivra Verra; Small Stage; I used to agree with you; Double Expresso Please; Turtle.
“The piece built a taut effective mood”, “There was some fresh experimental movement” – Georgia Straight
